Kendra interviews...Mandi Kontos!

It’s not every day you get to chat with someone who can seamlessly blend the supernatural with the mundane, but today’s guest, Mandi Kontos, does just that—and so much more! Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Mandi is the brilliant urban fantasy author behind Faded Fragments, the first in her Nexus Series. But she’s not just a writer—oh no. She’s a buying assistant by day, a writing mindset mentor by night, and the host of The Writing Apothecary Podcast, where she takes a holistic approach to unraveling the craft of storytelling.

With degrees in creative writing and publishing, a tuxedo cat named Rajah, and an impressive knack for turning mythology on its head, Mandi’s world is as rich and layered as her books. She’s also hard at work on Fractured Pieces, the second book in her series, coming June 2025, which promises selkies, assassins, and all the feels. (If Faded Fragments is anything to go by, we’re in for a ride!)

Ready to dive into her creative process, love for cacao, and what it’s like weaving Melbourne and Egypt into her tales? Let’s get started! And don’t forget to check out Mandi’s link tree for more about her work and podcast: Mandi Kontos.

1. Tell us about yourself! Who is Mandi Kontos?

I’m an urban fantasy author from Melbourne, Australia, with a deep love for mythology and storytelling. When I’m not writing or mentoring fellow writers, I’m busy being a buying assistant and sipping on cacao while cuddling my cat, Rajah. I’m also the host of The Writing Apothecary Podcast, where I share insights into the craft of writing and the importance of a holistic approach to creativity.

2. What inspired you to start writing, and what drew you to urban fantasy?

My love for mythology, especially Greek and Egyptian, is what first sparked my imagination. Urban fantasy allows me to weave those ancient myths into modern settings, creating stories that feel both timeless and current. It’s like giving old gods and creatures new lives in a world we recognize.

3. Can you tell us more about Faded Fragments, the first book in your Nexus Series?

Faded Fragments is about Aela, a half-selkie, who is grappling with her fragmented memories while trying to solve her mother’s murder. The story explores themes of identity, grief, and belonging. Plus, there’s plenty of magic, mystery, and mythological elements to keep readers intrigued.

4. How do you balance your day job, writing, and podcasting?

It’s all about prioritizing and creating a routine that works for me. I set realistic goals and make sure to carve out time for creativity, whether it’s drafting a novel or recording an episode for the podcast. Cacao breaks with Rajah also help keep me grounded.

5. Your podcast, The Writing Apothecary, takes a unique approach to writing advice. What inspired you to start it?

I wanted to create a space where writers could learn about the craft of storytelling while also taking care of their mental and creative health. Writing can be a solitary journey, and the podcast is my way of connecting with fellow writers and offering them support.

6. What’s your writing process like? Do you plot everything out or let the story take you where it wants to go?

I’m a mix of both. I usually have a loose outline to guide me, but I also leave room for spontaneity. Sometimes the characters have their own plans, and I’ve learned to trust the process and go with the flow.

7. Can you share any hints about what we can expect in Fractured Pieces, the second book in the Nexus Series?

Fractured Pieces delves deeper into Aela’s journey, introducing new mythological creatures like selkies and assassins. The stakes are higher, the emotions are rawer, and the world expands in ways I hope readers will find exciting.

8. Melbourne and Egypt are key settings in your series. How do these locations shape your storytelling?

Melbourne is my home, so it’s easy to draw inspiration from its vibrant streets and culture. Egypt, with its rich mythology and history, adds a sense of wonder and timelessness to the story. Together, they create a unique backdrop for the Nexus Series.

9. As a mentor for writers, what’s one piece of advice you always give?

Don’t be afraid to write a messy first draft. Perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. Let yourself experiment and explore; you can always refine your work during revisions.

10. What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects or releases you’d like to share?

Aside from finishing Fractured Pieces, I’m working on expanding The Writing Apothecary Podcast and developing new resources for writers. Stay tuned!

11. Where can readers find you and follow your work?

You can find me on Instagram @mandikontos_author or listen to The Writing Apothecary Podcast. All my updates and resources are linked there too!
