[Cue spotlight. The mic’s hot. George storms the stage, furious and unfiltered.]
So let me get this straight—
Jonathan Joss is dead.
Shot.
Murdered.
Point blank.
And the San Antonio Police Department, in their infinite wisdom, would like us all to just slow down, take a deep breath, and not jump to conclusions.
Because apparently—and stay with me here—arson, death threats, and being two queer Indigenous men in Texas isn’t enough to consider something a hate crime.
Nope. We need more! Maybe the shooter has to wear a T-shirt that says “I hate gays and natives and I’m about to commit a hate crime!” Maybe then the cops would say, “Gosh, you know what? This might possibly be targeted.”
BUT UNTIL THEN?
Just a good ol’ fashioned American misunderstanding!
You know, neighborly disputes. Like who mows the lawn too loud.
Or who has the nerve to exist in public while not being a straight white Christian!
And let’s talk about Jonathan Joss, huh?
He wasn’t some nobody.
He was John Redcorn! He was Chief Hotate!
He was a fucking legend!
And now he’s dead because some piss-stained bootlicker couldn’t handle the fact that he lived next door to love.
And San Antonio PD says: “Let’s not get political.”
Oh no!
Let’s not politicize murder!
Let’s not give the shooter any ideas about accountability!
What the fuck else do you need?
They were harassed for years.
Their house was burned.
They were stalked, threatened, terrorized.
And now Jonathan Joss is dead because he dared to push his husband out of the way and take the bullet himself.
You want to know what a hate crime looks like?
That’s it. That’s the fucking textbook.
If this ain’t a hate crime, then there’s no such thing as hate.
And maybe that’s the point.
Because if they call it a hate crime, they’d have to admit that America still has a hate problem.
That the cops aren’t there to protect people like Jonathan.
That the “rule of law” is written in disappearing ink if you’re the wrong color, the wrong gender, the wrong love.
But we know better.
And we are done being quiet.
We are done pretending that this is anything less than state-enabled hate.
So to the San Antonio PD?
Call it what it fucking is.
Because the rest of us already have.
